Calamari

Method

Prepare Marinara Sauce

  1. 1

    Cook the Sauce

In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.

  3. 3

    Simmer

Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Prepare Calamari

  1. 4

    Prepare the Breading

In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  2. 5

    Prepare the Wet Mix

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

  3. 6

    Coat the Calamari

Dip calamari rings first into the wet mix, then into the dry mix, ensuring they are well coated.

  4. 7

    Heat Oil

In a large deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).

  5. 8

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
