Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Onions
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
- 2
Form the Patties
While the onions are cooking, divide the ground beef into two equal portions and form each portion into a patty. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
Cooking

Cook the Patties
In the same skillet used for the onions, add another tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Once the butter is melted and bubbling, add the beef patties. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until browned. Flip the patties and top each with a slice of American cheese and a slice of Swiss cheese. Cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked to your desired doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt
Once the patties are cooked and the cheese is melted, place each patty on one slice of toasted marble rye bread, top with the caramelized onions, and cover with another slice of toasted bread. Press down lightly.

Serve
Cut the patty melt in half, if desired, and serve immediately while hot with your favorite sides.
