Southern Fried Chicken

Method

Southern Fried Chicken

  1. 1

    Marinate the Chicken

In a large bowl, combine the cut chicken pieces and buttermilk. Ensure all pieces are fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Coating

In another bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until well combined.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Coat the Chicken

Remove the chicken pieces from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, ensuring thorough coverage.

  5. 5

    Fry the Chicken

Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated chicken pieces in batches. Fry for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/74°C). Drain on paper towels.

Country Skillet Cake

  1. 6

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a cast-iron skillet or a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. 7

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly mixed.

  3. 8

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, mix the milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  4. 9

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 10

    Add Maple Syrup and Bacon

Fold in the maple syrup and crumbled bacon into the batter.

  6. 11

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter into the prepared skillet or baking dish. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 12

    Serve

Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, preferably drizzled with additional maple syrup.
