Prepare the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well to ensure there are no lumps.

Combine Mixtures
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.

Bake Cornbread
Pour the batter into a greased 8x8 inch baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool
Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Crumble the cornbread into small pieces for the dressing.

Sauté Vegetables
In a skillet over medium heat, melt a tablespoon of butter and add the diced celery and onion. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 5-7 minutes.

Combine Ingredients
In a large bowl, add the crumbled cornbread, sautéed vegetables, sage, thyme, and black pepper. Mix well.

Add Broth and Egg
Gradually pour in the chicken broth and beaten egg, mixing until the dressing is moist but not soggy. Adjust the broth amount based on your desired consistency.

Transfer to Baking Dish
Transfer the dressing mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Bake in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
