Method
Matcha Base
- 1
Sift and combine
Sift the 2 tsp matcha powder into a small bowl or matcha bowl (chawan) to remove clumps. This prevents gritty bits in the finished latte.
- 2
Add hot water
Pour 60 ml of hot water at about 80°C (175°F) over the sifted matcha. Do not use boiling water — it will make the matcha bitter.
- 3
Whisk to a smooth slurry
Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or small milk frother / handheld whisk, briskly whisk the matcha and hot water in a zig-zag (M or W) motion until the powder is fully dissolved and a fine froth appears on the surface, about 15–30 seconds. If using a frother, whisk until smooth and slightly frothy.
- 4
Sweeten the base
Stir in 1 tsp granulated sugar or simple syrup into the warm matcha until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste; reserve optional additional sweetener if desired later.
Milk
- 5
Heat the milk
Heat 1 cup of milk gently in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until it reaches about 60–65°C (140–150°F) — steaming but not boiling — or microwave for 45–60 seconds until hot but not boiling. Stir once or twice to prevent a skin forming.
- 6
Froth the milk
Froth the hot milk using a milk frother, French press, or whisk until it develops microfoam (small, velvety bubbles). For a creamier latte, use a steam wand if available. If using a French press, pump vigorously until foamy.
- 7
Add vanilla (optional)
If using, stir 1 tsp vanilla extract into the milk before frothing or right after heating for a subtle flavor note.
Assembly & Finish
- 8
Combine
Pour the prepared matcha slurry into a warmed cup. Slowly pour the hot, frothed milk over the matcha while holding back foam with a spoon. Then spoon the foam on top.
- 9
Adjust sweetness and garnish
Taste and add the optional additional sweetener (up to 1 tsp) if desired; stir gently. Lightly dust 1/4 tsp matcha powder over the foam for garnish using a fine sieve for an even dusting.
- 10
Serve
Serve immediately while hot. Stir before drinking to combine the froth and matcha if desired.
