Method
Brew
- 1
Rinse hibiscus
Quickly rinse the dried hibiscus flowers in a fine-mesh sieve under cool running water to remove dust. Shake off excess water.
- 2
Simmer
In a medium saucepan combine 4 cups water and the rinsed hibiscus flowers. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 8–10 minutes. For a stronger, more tart infusion simmer up to 12 minutes.
- 3
Steep
Remove from heat and cover the pan. Let the hibiscus steep in the hot liquid for 10 minutes to deepen color and flavor.
- 4
Strain
Strain the infusion through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a heatproof pitcher or bowl, pressing gently on the solids to extract liquid. Discard solids.
Sweeten & Finish
- 5
Sweeten
While the tea is still warm (but not boiling), stir in 1 tablespoon sugar (or alternative sweetener) until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste, adding up to 1–2 tablespoons if you prefer sweeter tea.
- 6
Add lime & spices
Stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice and, if using, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and the mint leaves. Taste and adjust lime or sweetener as needed.
- 7
Chill or serve hot
For iced hibiscus tea: let cool to room temperature then refrigerate until cold (about 30–45 minutes) or pour over ice. For hot tea: serve immediately in warmed cups.
Serve
- 8
To serve iced, fill glasses with ice, divide the chilled hibiscus tea among them, garnish with lime slices and a sprig of mint. For hot tea, pour into cups and garnish with a lime slice if desired.
