Cold Brew Concentrate
To Serve (16 oz)
Equipment (optional, not consumed)
Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
- 1
Measure and Grind
Measure 1 cup (about 85–90 g) of whole coffee beans. Grind coarsely using a burr grinder to a texture similar to raw sugar or coarse sea salt. A coarse grind minimizes fines and reduces muddy or overly bitter extraction.
- 2
Combine Coffee and Water
Place the ground coffee into a clean 1–2 liter (quart) jar or pitcher. Pour 4 cups (960 ml) of cold, filtered water evenly over the grounds. Stir gently for 10–20 seconds to make sure all grounds are saturated and there are no dry pockets.
- 3
Steep
Cover the jar or pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap. Let the mixture steep at room temperature (65–75°F / 18–24°C) for 16–20 hours. For a milder concentrate, steep 12–14 hours; for a stronger concentrate, steep up to 20 hours. Avoid warm locations that can accelerate extraction.
- 4
Pre-Strain
After steeping, gently stir the jar to resuspend any settled grounds. Place a fine mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth, a nut milk bag, or a coffee filter over a second clean jar or pitcher. Slowly pour the steeped mixture through the strainer to catch the majority of grounds.
- 5
Fine Filtration
For a clearer concentrate, filter the pre-strained liquid through a second filter (a fresh coffee filter or a fine conical paper filter) into the final container. This step removes fine particles and reduces sludge in the bottom of the cup. Discard spent grounds and used filters.
- 6
Refrigerate Concentrate
Seal the container and refrigerate the cold brew concentrate. It will keep well for up to 10–14 days; flavor is best within the first 7 days.
To Serve (16 oz)
- 7
Portion concentrate and dilute. For a 16 oz serving, pour 6 fl oz (180 ml) of cold brew concentrate into a glass. Add approximately 10 fl oz (300 ml) of cold water or milk to reach 16 oz total. Adjust dilution to taste: use more concentrate for stronger coffee (e.g., 1:1 concentrate:water) or more water/milk for a milder cup.
- 8
Add ice and sweetener. Add about 1 cup of ice to the glass. If desired, stir in 1 tsp simple syrup (or other sweetener) and 2 tbsp milk, cream, or non-dairy creamer. Taste and adjust sweetness or milk.
- 9
Serve. Stir well and serve immediately. Store any leftover concentrate in the refrigerator; do not dilute until ready to drink.
