Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peeling the Potatoes

Begin by peeling the Russet potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Make sure to remove all the skin.

  2. 2

    Cutting the Potatoes

Cut the peeled potatoes into evenly sized chunks, approximately 1-2 inches in size, to ensure even cooking.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Boiling the Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water. Bring the pot to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

  2. 4

    Draining the Potatoes

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them in a colander and let them sit for a minute to allow excess steam to escape.

Mashing

  1. 5

    Mashing the Potatoes

Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add in the unsalted butter, whole milk, sour cream, garlic powder, black pepper, and additional salt to taste. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency.

  2. 6

    Taste and Adjust

Taste the mashed potatoes and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if necessary.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve Hot

Serve the mashed potatoes hot, optionally garnished with extra butter or chopped chives.
