Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In another bowl, cream the softened butter with the sugar mixture until light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Toffee Preparation

  1. 7

    Make the Toffee

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar, unsalted butter, and heavy cream. Stir until the mixture comes to a boil.

  2. 8

    Cook the Toffee

Allow the mixture to boil for 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

  3. 9

    Add Nuts (Optional)

If desired, stir in the chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.

  4. 10

    Pour Over Cake

Once the cake is baked and slightly cooled, pour the warm toffee mixture over the top of the cake, spreading it evenly.

  5. 11

    Cool and Serve

Allow the cake to cool completely before serving, letting the toffee set on top.
