Main Ingredients

For Frying

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings, about 1/8 inch thick. Separate the onion rings and set aside.

  2. 2

In a medium bowl, pour the buttermilk over the onion rings, ensuring they are fully submerged. Allow them to soak for at least 30 minutes to an hour.

Breading

  1. 3

In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

  2. 4

After the onions have soaked, remove them from the buttermilk and let the excess liquid drip off. Toss the onion rings in the flour mixture, coating them evenly.

Frying

  1. 5

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of the flour mixture into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

  2. 6

Carefully add the coated onion rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.

  3. 7

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried onion strings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Season with additional salt if desired.

Serving

  1. 8

Serve the onion strings hot as an appetizer or snack, with your choice of dipping sauce.
