Method

Preparing the Fish

  1. 1

    Season the Cod

Sprinkle the Icelandic cod fillets with salt and black pepper on both sides. Set aside for a few minutes to allow the seasoning to penetrate.

Making the Beer Batter

  1. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the beer and the egg to the dry mixture. Stir until just combined; the batter should be slightly lumpy. Do not overmix.

Preparing the Fries

  1. 4

    Cut the Potatoes

Peel the potatoes (if desired) and cut them into thick strips to form fries.

  2. 5

    Soak the Fries

Place the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch. Drain and pat dry with a paper towel.

  3. 6

    Fry the Potatoes

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the potatoes in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels. Season with salt immediately.

Frying the Fish

  1. 7

    Heat Oil

In a deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Ensure there is enough oil to submerge the fish.

  2. 8

    Dredge the Cod

Dip each seasoned cod fillet into the beer batter, allowing excess to drip off.

  3. 9

    Fry the Cod

Carefully place the battered fish into the hot oil. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Dish

Serve the fish alongside the fries, garnished with lemon wedges and accompanied by tartar sauce for dipping.
