Method
Cocktail
- 1
Measure and Combine
In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz aged rum (or rum liqueur), 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, and 0.25 oz demerara syrup.
- 2
Add Bitters and Smoked Saline
Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and the optional smoked saline (about 1/8 tsp dissolved in a small splash of water). The smoked saline should be subtle — it brightens flavors and adds a hint of smoke that echoes a private-barrel profile.
- 3
Stir with Ice
Fill the mixing glass with large ice or plenty of cubed ice. Stir vigorously for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and properly integrated.
- 4
Prepare Glass
Place a single large ice cube in a chilled rocks glass.
- 5
Strain
Using a Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the rocks glass over the large ice cube.
Garnish & Finish
- 6
- 7
Garnish
Drop the expressed orange peel into the glass and optionally add a Luxardo cherry on a pick or directly to the drink.
- 8
Optional Smoke (for presentation)
If you want a smoky presentation, briefly capture smoke in a cloche over the glass or use a smoking gun to blanket the finished cocktail and then serve immediately. The smoked saline in the base keeps smoke from tasting one-dimensional.
- 9
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the layered flavors: bold bourbon, rounded aged rum notes, sweet-wine vermouth, orange lift, and a subtle caramel/smoke backbone.
