Method

Bourbon

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Select an old-fashioned (rocks) glass. Add one large ice cube to the glass so it begins chilling while you measure ingredients.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

Pour 2 oz Elijah Craig Barrel Proof into a mixing glass or directly over the large ice cube in your chilled old-fashioned glass. Add 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

If using a mixing glass, add ice, then stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until properly chilled and slightly diluted (the liquid should become slightly glossy and the outside of the mixing glass slightly frosted). If building in the serving glass, briefly stir 10–15 seconds to integrate and chill without over-diluting.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

If you stirred in a mixing glass, strain over the large ice cube in the prepared old-fashioned glass. If built in the glass, ensure the drink is well combined and chilled.

  5. 5

    Express garnish

Hold the orange peel with the outside (zest) facing down over the glass and give it a firm twist to express the oils over the surface. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

  6. 6

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the high-proof expression and complex oak, caramel, and spice profile. If preferred, omit simple syrup for a drier presentation or add a second dash of bitters to accent spice.
