Method
Cocktail
- 1
Build and chill
Place a large ice cube into a chilled rocks glass and set aside to cool while you prepare the drink.
- 2
Stir
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes aromatic bitters. Fill the mixing glass with ice (enough to come near the rim). Using a bar spoon, stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (the mixing glass should feel very cold).
- 3
Strain
Discard the small meltwater from the rocks glass if any accumulated, leave the large ice cube in place, and strain the chilled cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice cube.
- 4
Garnish and finish
Express the oils from an orange twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a quick fold so the peel's oils spray onto the cocktail. Rim the glass with the twist and drop it into the drink (or perch it on the rim) as garnish. Serve immediately.

If you prefer slightly drier or sweeter, adjust the sweet vermouth between 0.75–1.25 oz to taste. For a brighter aroma, add an additional dash of orange bitters. Use a quality large ice cube to minimize dilution.
