Preparation of Filling

  1. 1

    Cook the Beef and Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent. Then, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.

  2. 2

    Add Spinach

If using fresh spinach, add it to the skillet and cook until wilted. If using frozen spinach, thaw and drain it well before adding it to the mixture. Stir to combine.

  3. 3

    Mix in Cheeses and Seasonings

Remove the skillet from heat and let the mixture cool slightly. Stir in the ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning until well combined.

Assembly

  1. 4

    Fill Cannelloni

Using a small spoon or piping bag, carefully fill each cannelloni tube with the beef and spinach mixture.

  2. 5

    Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Spread some tomato sauce on the bottom of a baking dish to prevent sticking.

  3. 6

    Arrange Cannelloni

Place the filled cannelloni tubes in the baking dish in a single layer. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top, ensuring they are well covered.

Topping and Baking

  1. 7

    Add Cheese Topping

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and the additional grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the cannelloni.

  2. 8

    Bake

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serving

  1. 9

    Cool and Serve

Remove the cannelloni from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
