Method

Preparation of Potatoes

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Peel the potatoes and cut them into roughly equal-sized chunks, about 1-2 inches.

  2. 2

    Boil Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce to medium heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

Mashing the Potatoes

  1. 3

    Drain and Return to Pot

Once cooked, drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Allow them to steam for a minute to remove excess moisture.

  2. 4

    Add Butter

Add 4 tablespoons of butter to the potatoes while they are still hot.

  3. 5

    Mash the Potatoes

Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency, whether smooth or a bit chunky.

  4. 6

    Incorporate Milk

Slowly add in 1 cup of milk while mashing, until the potatoes are creamy and smooth.

  5. 7

    Season to Taste

Add salt and black pepper to taste. Mix well.

Optional Add-ins

  1. 8

    Add Garlic (if using)

If you like garlic, mince 3 cloves and sauté them in 1 tablespoon of butter until fragrant. Stir this into the mashed potatoes for added flavor.

  2. 9

Fold in Sour Cream (if using)

For a creamier texture, fold in 1 cup of sour cream into the mashed potatoes.

  3. 10

    Garnish with Chives (if using)

Chop 2 tablespoons of fresh chives and sprinkle them over the top of the mashed potatoes for a fresh garnish.
