Beignet Preparation Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, egg, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.
- 2
Knead and Rise
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- 3
Shape the Beignets
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or desired shapes. Let the cut pieces rest for about 30 minutes.
- 4
Fry the Beignets
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the beignets in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 5
Serve
Dust the hot beignets with powdered sugar and serve with Steen's cane syrup on the side for dipping.
