Prepare the Calamari
Begin by rinsing the calamari rings under cold water and patting them dry with paper towels.

Make the Breading
In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well to combine.

Soak in Buttermilk
Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each calamari ring into the buttermilk, ensuring it is fully coated, then transfer it to the flour mixture. Toss to coat evenly.

Fry the Calamari
Working in batches, carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Simmer the Sauce
Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce the heat and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil.
