Cocktail
Prepare and chill glass
If desired, chill a rocks glass or coupe by filling it with ice and setting aside while you mix the cocktail.
Combine ingredients
Add the amaro (1.5 oz), reposado tequila (1 oz), fresh blood orange juice (1 oz), fresh lime juice (0.5 oz), agave syrup (0.25 oz), and 2 dashes orange bitters into a cocktail shaker.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (enough to nearly fill). Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the exterior of the shaker feels very cold and properly diluted.
Prepare serving glass
Discard the ice used to chill the glass, if you chilled one. If you prefer the drink over ice, add fresh large ice cube(s) to a rocks glass; for a up/straight serve, leave the glass empty or chilled.
Strain
Double-strain (use both the shaker strainer and a fine mesh sieve) into the prepared glass — over fresh ice for a rocks presentation, or neat into a chilled coupe.
Garnish and finish
Express the oils of a blood orange twist over the drink by holding the peel with the colored side toward the surface and giving it a quick snap; rub the peel on the rim and drop it in (or float a blood orange wheel). For added aroma, briefly flame the orange peel over the cocktail and discard the charred pith if desired.
