Pretzel Dough

Method

Pretzel Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour and mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.

  4. 4

    Shape the Pretzels

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape into pretzel form.

  5. 5

    Prepare Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.

  6. 6

    Egg Wash

Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

  7. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove and let cool.
