Clarita's Margarita Cocktail

Method

Clarita's Margarita Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare the glass

If you prefer a salted rim, combine the coarse salt and smoked paprika on a small plate and mix. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks or coupe glass, then dip the rim into the salt mixture to coat. Set the glass aside in the freezer or at room temperature while you mix the drink.

  2. 2

    Juice citrus and measure

Juice fresh limes and (if using) a blood orange. Measure 1 oz fresh lime juice and 1/2 oz fresh blood orange juice. Using fresh-squeezed juice is important for brightness.

  3. 3

    Shake the cocktail

In a shaker, add 2 oz reposado tequila, 1 oz Cointreau, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz fresh blood orange juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 2 dashes orange bitters (if using). Fill the shaker with about 1 cup of ice. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted.

  4. 4

    Double strain and serve

Open the shaker and strain the drink into the prepared chilled glass over fresh ice (for a rocks glass) or without ice for a coupe. For a smoother texture, double-strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove small ice shards and pulp.

  5. 5

    Garnish and finish

Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge and a thin blood orange slice if available. Taste and adjust: if you prefer sweeter, add another 1/4 oz agave and stir gently; for tarter, a quick squeeze of fresh lime. Serve immediately.
