Method
Cheeses
- 1
Bring to room temperature
Remove all cheeses from the refrigerator 30–60 minutes before serving so flavors and textures open up. Place on the board with variety: hard/aged, semi-firm, and soft cheeses spaced apart.
- 2
Prepare soft cheese
If using Brie/Camembert, score the top lightly in a crosshatch and optionally bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes until just soft for a warm option. Let cool slightly before serving if baked.
- 3
Crumble or slice goat cheese as needed. For presentation, roll part of the goat cheese log in crushed nuts or herbs and place on the board.
Cured Meats
- 4
Fan or fold thin slices of prosciutto into loose ribbons. Arrange salami and soppressata in overlapping circles or folded stacks to create height and easy picking.
- 5
Make small meat rosettes: fold slices in half lengthwise, then roll from one end to create a flower shape and tuck into the board gaps.
Bread & Crackers
- 6
- 7
Arrange crackers in small stacks or fanned groups around the board so guests can reach them easily.
Pickles & Conserves
- 8
Place cornichons and olives in small bowls to contain brine and make them easy to pick. Position near meats and cheeses that pair well with acidic flavors.
- 9
Spoon fig jam or conserve into a small dish with a spreader. Place next to stronger cheeses (like cheddar or blue) for balance.
Nuts & Dried Fruit
- 10
Toast almonds lightly in a dry pan over medium heat for 3–4 minutes until fragrant, then cool. Scatter nuts and dried apricots in small piles to add texture contrast.
Fresh Fruit & Garnish
- 11
Rinse grapes and herbs. Cut figs in half if small; slice apples thinly and brush with lemon juice to prevent browning if using. Tuck fruit and herb sprigs into gaps for color and freshness.
Accents & Spreads
- 12
Place honey in a shallow dish or small jar with a honey dipper. Spoon whole-grain mustard into a small bowl. Position both where guests can reach them easily; honey pairs well with soft cheeses, mustard with meats.
Appetizer options (prep & assembly)
- 13
Prosciutto-wrapped melon bites
Cut cantaloupe or honeydew into 12 bite-size wedges or cubes. Wrap each piece with a half-slice of prosciutto and secure with a toothpick. Chill briefly until serving.
- 14
Bruschetta with tomato and basil
Dice 2 medium tomatoes and mix with 1 tbsp olive oil, pinch salt, pepper, and 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil. Toast 12 baguette slices, rub with a cut garlic clove, top with tomato mixture and a drizzle of olive oil.
- 15
Goat cheese-stuffed dates wrapped in bacon
Pit 12 Medjool dates, stuff each with about 1 tsp goat cheese, wrap with half a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12–15 minutes until bacon is crisp. Drain on paper towel and transfer to the board warm or room temp.
- 16
Marinated mozzarella skewers
Assemble 12 skewers with 1 small mozzarella ball, 1 cherry tomato, and 1 basil leaf each. Marinate briefly in 2 tbsp olive oil, a pinch of salt, pepper, and a splash of balsamic for 10–15 minutes. Arrange on the board.
Assembly and presentation
- 17
Select a large board or two smaller boards. Start by placing cheeses spaced around the board, followed by small bowls (olives, cornichons, jams). Add meats next to complementary cheeses, then tuck bread/crackers into empty areas.
- 18
Fill gaps with fruits, nuts, and garnishes. Place honey and mustard where accessible. Vary heights by stacking some items and using small bowls to create interest. Leave cheese knives and small tongs for serving.
- 19
Label cheeses and any allergen-containing items if serving guests. Replenish items as needed.
