Place the bottle of Chianti in a refrigerator for 20–30 minutes if you want it slightly cool (Chianti is best served lightly chilled or at cellar temperature, about 60–65°F / 15–18°C). Prepare an ice bucket filled with ice if you prefer quicker chilling.

Chill & Set Up

Choose large-bowled red wine glasses (Bordeaux-style or generic red wine glasses) to allow aromas of cherry, plum and spice to concentrate. Ensure glasses are clean and dry.

Select Glassware

Use a waiter’s corkscrew or wine key to remove the foil and cork. Wipe the bottle lip with a clean cloth or napkin to remove any dust or cork fragments.

Open the Bottle

If the bottle has sediment or you want to aerate the wine to open the fruit and spice aromas, decant into a clean decanter for 20–30 minutes. For younger Chianti, 20–30 minutes of decanting helps soften tannins and reveal cherry and plum notes.

Decant (optional)

Pour 5 oz (about 0.15 liters) per glass. If serving multiple guests, pour each glass about one-third to one-half full to allow swirling. Use steady motion and wipe any drips with a napkin.

Pour

Arrange small portions of aged Parmesan or Pecorino, slices of cured meats (about 150 g total), and toasted crostini on a board. These pair well with Chianti’s cherry, plum and spice profile and complement its acidity.

Serve with Accompaniments

Add a sprig of fresh rosemary or thyme to the board or rest gently on the rim of each glass for an aromatic accent (do not place herbs directly into the wine).

Garnish (optional)

Encourage guests to swirl the wine to release aromas, smell for cherry, plum and spice, and take small sips to appreciate acidity and tannin structure. Chianti pairs well with tomato-based pastas, roasted meats, and aged cheeses as described on the menu.

Tasting Notes & Tips

Recork the bottle using the original cork or a wine stopper and store upright in the refrigerator. Consume within 3–5 days for best flavor. Allow to warm slightly toward serving temperature before drinking if chilled.
