Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Caramelize Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Once hot, add 1 cup of sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare Au Jus

In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of beef broth, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and let it cook for about 10 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Assembly

  1. 3

    Assemble the Sandwich

Slice the baguette in half lengthwise. Layer the shaved roast beef generously on the bottom half of the baguette. Top with the caramelized onions and evenly distribute the Gruyère cheese over the top. Place the top half of the baguette over the cheese.

  2. 4

    Heat the Sandwich

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the assembled sandwich on a baking sheet and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy.

Serving

  1. 5

    Serve

Cut the sandwich into portions and serve hot with a small bowl of au jus for dipping. Pair with your choice of fries or slaw on the side.
