Directions

  1. 1

    Make the Buttermilk Biscuits

Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in buttermilk until just combined. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently. Roll out and cut into biscuits. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Sausage Gravy

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until browned. Sprinkle flour over the sausage and stir to combine. Gradually add the milk while stirring continuously until thickened. Season with black pepper and salt to taste. Keep warm.

  3. 3

    Fry the Chicken

In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Fry the chicken pieces until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside.

  4. 4

    Cook the Eggs

In the same pan, crack the eggs and fry sunny side up until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny.

  5. 5

    Assemble the Cowboy Breakfast

On a plate, place a warm biscuit, top it with a generous amount of sausage gravy, add a piece of fried chicken, and finish with a sunny side up egg on top.
