Prepare the Ingredients
Gather all the ingredients and slice the tomato into thin rounds.

Assemble the Sandwich
On two slices of bread, layer cheese, ham, lettuce, and tomato. Season with salt and pepper. Top with the remaining slices of bread.

Toast the Sandwich
Spread butter on the outside of each sandwich. Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Serve
Remove from heat, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.
