Flan

Method

Flan

  1. 1

    Prepare the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add 1 cup of granulated sugar. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and turns a golden brown color. Quickly pour the caramel into a round 9-inch baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.

  2. 2

    Blend Flan Mixture

In a blender, combine 2 cups of whole milk, 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk, 4 large eggs, and 1 tsp of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  3. 3

    Bake the Flan

Pour the flan mixture over the cooled caramel in the baking dish. Place the baking dish inside a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan dish. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 50-60 minutes, or until set.

  4. 4

    Cool and Unmold

Remove the flan from the water bath and allow it to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight. To unmold, run a knife around the edges of the flan, place a serving plate on top, and invert.

Dulce de Leche Sauce

  1. 5

    Make the Dulce de Leche

In a saucepan over low heat, add 1 can of sweetened condensed milk. Stir constantly for about 30-40 minutes until it thickens and turns a caramel color. Add 1 tsp of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, stirring to combine.
