Mashed Potatoes

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and cut them into even-sized chunks, about 1 to 2 inches.

  2. 2

    Boil the Potatoes

Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water. Bring it to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Garlic (Optional)

If using garlic, peel and crush the garlic cloves. You can add them to the pot with the potatoes for added flavor, or sauté them in a small pan with a tablespoon of butter until golden brown.

  4. 4

    Drain the Potatoes

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander and let them sit for a minute to allow excess steam to escape.

  5. 5

    Mash the Potatoes

Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add the butter and mash with a potato masher until smooth and creamy.

  6. 6

    Add Cream and Seasonings

Pour in the heavy cream and continue to mash until well combined. Season with the remaining salt and black pepper to taste. If you added sautéed garlic, mix it in at this stage.

  7. 7

    Serve

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and add additional butter on top if desired. Serve warm.
