Method

Prepare the Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

Make the Batter

  1. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

  2. 3

    Add Cold Water

Gradually mix in cold water until the batter is smooth and has a consistency similar to pancake batter.

Fry the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the battered onion rings into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  4. 7

    Drain and Season

Once fried, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. If desired, sprinkle with optional seasoning such as paprika, cayenne pepper, or parmesan cheese while still hot.

Serve

  1. 8

    Presentation

Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
