Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's hot enough for baking.

  2. 2

    Prepare Baking Pan

Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prevent sticking.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  2. 4

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the granulated sugar and beat until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

  3. 5

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. 6

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Baking

  1. 7

    Add Optional Ingredients

If desired, fold in chocolate chips and/or nuts into the batter.

  2. 8

    Pour Batter into Pans

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

  3. 9

    Bake the Cakes

Place the pans in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cooling and Serving

  1. 10

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

  2. 11

    Serve

Once cooled, frost with your favorite frosting or serve plain. Slice and enjoy your delicious homemade cakes!
