Pie Crust

Method

Pie Crust Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Whisk together until blended.

  2. 2

    Cut in Butter

Add the unsalted butter, cut into small cubes, to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Add Ice Water

Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.

  4. 4

    Chill the Dough

Form the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Apple Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Prepare Apples

Peel, core, and slice the apples. Place them in a large mixing bowl.

  2. 6

    Mix Filling Ingredients

Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice, all-purpose flour, and vanilla extract to the apples. Toss until evenly coated.

Assembling the Pie

  1. 7

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 8

    Roll Out Dough

On a floured surface, roll out half of the chilled dough to fit your pie dish. Place it in the dish and trim the edges.

  3. 9

    Add Apple Filling

Pour the apple filling into the crust, spreading it evenly.

  4. 10

    Top with Second Crust

Roll out the second half of the dough and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal.

  5. 11

    Brush and Sprinkle

Brush the top crust with melted unsalted butter and sprinkle with granulated sugar.

Baking the Pie

  1. 12

    Bake

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  2. 13

    Cool and Serve

Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
