Sushi Rice

Sushi Filling

Method

Sushi Rice Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse and Cook Rice

Rinse 1 cup of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice and 1.5 cups of water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until water is absorbed.

  2. 2

    Season Rice

Once cooked, remove the rice from heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 0.5 teaspoons of salt until dissolved. Stir this mixture into the warm rice gently to season it. Let the rice cool to room temperature.

Sushi Filling Preparation

  1. 3

    Prepare Salmon

Ensure the fresh salmon fillet is skinless and boneless. Slice it into thin strips, about 1/4 inch thick.

  2. 4

    Slice Vegetables

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and slice it into thin strips. Peel and slice the cucumber into thin sticks.

  3. 5

    Prepare Cream Cheese

Soften the cream cheese slightly at room temperature for easier spreading.

Sushi Assembly

  1. 6

    Lay Nori

Place a nori sheet, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat or a clean surface.

  2. 7

    Spread Rice

Wet your hands to avoid sticking, and take a handful of sushi rice. Spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  3. 8

    Add Fillings

Lay strips of salmon, avocado, cucumber, and a line of cream cheese across the rice, about 1 inch from the bottom edge.

  4. 9

    Roll Sushi

Using the mat, carefully lift the edge closest to you and start rolling it away from you, applying gentle pressure. Roll until the filling is enclosed, then use the mat to shape it into a cylinder.

  5. 10

    Slice Sushi

With a sharp knife, slice the rolled sushi into 6-8 pieces, wiping the knife with a damp cloth between slices to keep it clean.

Serving

  1. 11

    Plate and Serve

Arrange the sushi pieces on a plate. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
