Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings, approximately 1/4 inch thick. Separate the rings carefully and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until well combined. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then stir in the cold water. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth.

Coating

  1. 3

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Then, roll the battered onion ring into the bread crumbs (and Parmesan cheese if using), pressing gently to adhere the crumbs.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles, it's ready.

  2. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully add the coated onion rings to the hot oil, a few at a time, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 6

    Serve

Serve the onion rings hot, with your choice of dipping sauce such as ranch, ketchup, or aioli.
