- 1
Prepare the batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
- 2
Add beer
Gradually add the beer to the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth. Let the batter sit for 10 minutes.
- 3
Heat the oil
In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Batter the cod
Dip each piece of cod into the batter, allowing excess to drip off.
- 5
Fry the cod
Carefully place the battered cod in the hot oil and fry for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Fries
- 6
Prepare the potatoes
Peel and cut the potatoes into thick strips.
- 7
Soak the fries
Soak the potato strips in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch.
- 8
Heat the oil
In another pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- 9
Fry the fries
Fry the soaked potato strips in batches for about 5-7 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels, seasoning with salt immediately.
Tartar Sauce
- 10
Mix the ingredients
In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, relish, lemon juice, capers, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until fully combined.
- 11
Chill
Refrigerate the tartar sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
