Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

  4. 4

    Mix Together

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Then, stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and thin.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cake

Once baked, let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Molten Center Preparation

  1. 7

    Melt Chocolate and Butter

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until completely melted and smooth.

  2. 8

    Mix Molten Center Ingredients

Add the powdered sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract to the melted chocolate mixture. Whisk until fully combined and smooth.

  3. 9

    Prepare for Baking

Grease four ramekins and divide the molten center mixture evenly among them.

  4. 10

    Bake Molten Centers

Bake the ramekins in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 12-14 minutes until the edges are firm but the center is soft.

  5. 11

    Serve

Let the molten centers cool for a minute, then carefully invert them onto plates and serve warm with the chocolate cake.
