Bagel Ingredients

Topping Options

Method

Bagel Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups) and sugar (2 tbs). Sprinkle the active dry yeast (2 tsp) over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (1 tbs). Mix well.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Once the yeast is frothy, pour it into the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough starts to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

  5. 5

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

  6. 6

    Shape the Bagels

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then poke a hole through the center with your finger, stretching it to form a bagel shape.

Boiling and Baking

  1. 7

    Prepare Boiling Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda (2 tbs). This will help give the bagels their chewy texture.

  2. 8

    Boil the Bagels

Carefully drop a few bagels at a time into the boiling water. Boil for about 1-2 minutes on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal (2 tbs).

  3. 9

    Add Toppings

While the bagels are still wet, sprinkle your desired toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything seasoning) on top. You can also sprinkle with coarse sea salt to taste.

  4. 10

    Bake the Bagels

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the bagels for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown, rotating halfway through for even baking.

  5. 11

    Cool and Serve

Once baked, remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
