Method

Preparation of Anise Base

  1. 1

    Prepare the Anise Infusion

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of anise seeds with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Strain the Mixture

After simmering, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Discard the solids from the anise seeds.

  3. 3

    Add Sugar

While the liquid is still warm, add 2 cups of sugar to the strained anise infusion. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Final Assembly

  1. 4

    Combine with Alcohol

Once the sugar has dissolved, let the mixture cool down to room temperature. Then, add 2 cups of high-proof alcohol (like grain alcohol or vodka) to the infusion. Mix well.

  2. 5

    Add Optional Flavorings (if desired)

If you want to enhance the flavor, add 1 cup of coffee beans, 1 whole vanilla bean (split open), and the peel of 1 orange to the mixture. Stir gently.

  3. 6

    Bottle and Age

Transfer the sambuca mixture into sterilized bottles. Seal tightly and let it age in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks for best flavor.
