Method
Breadsticks Preparation
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
- 3
Combine Mixtures
Once the yeast is activated, add it to the dry ingredients along with the olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- 4
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
First Rise
Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 6
Shape Breadsticks
After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long stick shape.
- 7
Second Rise
Place the shaped breadsticks onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- 8
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 9
Bake Breadsticks
Brush the risen breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Tomato Sauce Preparation
- 10
Cook Garlic
In a saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- 11
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- 12
Simmer Sauce
Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
- 13
Finish with Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving. Adjust seasoning to taste.
