Method

Preparation of the Base

  1. 1

    Prepare the Flax Egg

In a small bowl, combine the flaxseed meal and water. Stir well and let it sit for about 5 minutes to thicken.

  2. 2

    Cook the Quinoa

Rinse quinoa under cold water. In a saucepan, combine quinoa and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until water is absorbed. Fluff with a fork.

  3. 3

    Mash the Black Beans

In a large mixing bowl, add the black beans. Using a fork or potato masher, mash them until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  4. 4

    Mix the Ingredients

To the bowl with black beans, add cooked quinoa, rolled oats, chopped onion, minced garlic, and any optional add-ins you desire. Mix until well combined.

Seasoning and Forming Patties

  1. 5

    Add Spices

Sprinkle in cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, and chili powder. Add the prepared flax egg and mix everything thoroughly until the mixture holds together.

  2. 6

    Form the Patties

Using your hands, take a portion of the mixture and form it into a patty shape. Repeat until all mixture is used.

Cooking the Patties

  1. 7

    Cook the Patties

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add a small amount of oil if desired. Cook the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.

  2. 8

    Serve

Serve the patties on burger buns with your choice of condiments and toppings.
