Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Wash and peel the russet potatoes. Cut them into even sticks, about 1/4 inch thick. Rinse the potato sticks under cold water to remove excess starch, then soak them in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the right temperature for frying.

  2. 3

    Dry the Potatoes

After soaking, drain the potato sticks and pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels. This step is crucial for achieving crispy fries.

  3. 4

    Fry the Potatoes

Carefully add a handful of potato sticks to the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 4-5 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  4. 5

    Season the Fries

While the fries are still hot, sprinkle salt, black pepper, and garlic powder (if using) over them. Toss gently to ensure they are evenly coated.
