Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Clean the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Coating

In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.

  3. 3

    Coat the Calamari

Dredge the calamari rings in the flour mixture until fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.

Frying the Calamari

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 6

    Drain and Serve

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried calamari from the oil, and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Making the Spicy Aioli

  1. 7

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, minced garlic, lemon juice, and hot sauce.

  2. 8

    Season

Add salt to taste and mix until smooth and well combined.

Serving

  1. 9

    Plate the Dish

Serve the fried calamari on a platter with lemon wedges on the side.

  2. 10

    Serve with Aioli

Place the spicy aioli in a small bowl for dipping alongside the calamari.
