Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the rice

In a fine mesh strainer, rinse the glutinous rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Soak the rice

Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl and cover it with water. Allow it to soak for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to ensure even cooking.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Drain the rice

After soaking, drain the rice and transfer it to a steamer basket lined with cheesecloth or parchment paper.

  2. 4

    Prepare the steamer

Fill a pot with water, making sure the water level is below the steamer basket. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat.

  3. 5

    Steam the rice

Once the water is boiling, place the steamer basket with the rice over the pot. Cover with a lid and steam for about 25-30 minutes, or until the rice is tender and sticky.

  4. 6

    Optional: Prepare coconut sauce

In a small saucepan, combine coconut milk, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil. This is optional but adds a creamy flavor.

  5. 7

    Serve the rice

Once cooked, remove the rice from the steamer and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm, drizzled with the optional coconut sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds if desired.
