Method
Tofu Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Tofu
Drain the firm tofu and press it between paper towels to remove excess moisture. Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.
- 2
Coat with Cornstarch
Spread the cornstarch onto a plate and roll the tofu cubes in it until they are evenly coated.
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a large frying pan or deep pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Fry the Tofu
Carefully add the cornstarch-coated tofu cubes to the hot oil. Fry in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Sauce Preparation
- 5
Make the Garlic Chili Sauce
Mince the garlic cloves and combine in a small bowl with chili oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and honey or maple syrup. Mix well until combined.
Crispy Basil
- 6
Fry the Basil
In a small pan, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the fresh basil leaves and fry until they are crispy, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Remove immediately and drain on paper towels.
