Method
Cake Layers
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour five 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well mixed.
- 3
- 4
Incorporate Boiling Water
Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined. The batter will be thin.
- 5
Bake the Layers
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- 6
Cool the Cakes
Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Chocolate Frosting
- 7
Prepare the Frosting
In a medium bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with milk, mixing until smooth.
- 8
Add Vanilla
Mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated and the frosting is fluffy.
- 9
Assemble the Cake
Once the cake layers are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then repeat with the remaining layers.
- 10
Frost the Sides
Use the remaining frosting to cover the sides of the cake. Smooth the frosting with a spatula for an even finish.
- 11
Chill and Serve
Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Serve and enjoy!
