For the cocktail

Method

Prepare fruit (if using fresh blackberries)

  1. 1

If using fresh blackberries instead of purée, place 6–8 fresh blackberries in a mixing glass or shaker. Muddle gently until broken down but still a bit juicy (about 10–15 light presses).

  2. 2

If you prefer a smoother purée, strain the muddled berries through a fine mesh strainer into a small container, pressing to extract about 3/4 ounce of juice/purée.

Build and shake

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz Bird Dog Blackberry vodka, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and 0.75 oz blackberry purée (or strained muddled blackberry juice).

  2. 4

    Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 4–6 large cubes) or add 1 cup crushed ice. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is cold and the mixture is well-chilled.

Strain and serve

  1. 5

Fill a rocks glass or Collins glass with crushed ice (if not already using crushed). Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh strainer to remove seeds and pulp for a smooth finish.

  2. 6

If you prefer a slightly lighter, fizzy drink, top with about 1 oz club soda or sparkling water and give a gentle stir (1–2 rotations) to combine. Otherwise leave unsplit for a stronger cocktail.

Garnish

  1. 7

Garnish with 2–3 fresh blackberries skewered on a cocktail pick, a lemon wheel on the rim, and an optional mint sprig slapped to release aroma. Serve immediately.
