Whiskey Base

Sweetening & Aromatics

Method

Whiskey Base

  1. 1

    Measure

Measure 2 oz of your chosen bourbon into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker.

Sweetening & Aromatics

  1. 2

Add 0.25 oz pure maple syrup and 2 dashes of orange bitters into the mixing glass with the bourbon. These provide a rounded sweetness and citrus-leaning aromatics that complement the finished-bourbon character.

Optional finish / spritz

  1. 3

If you want an extra layer that nods to barrel finishing, pour 0.25 oz of a bold rye or a small splash of tawny port into a separate glass and swirl it to coat the inside (a rinse). Discard excess so only a whisper of that flavor remains. Alternatively, use the 0.25 oz directly in the cocktail for a stronger influence.

Mixing & Dilution

  1. 4

Add plenty of ice (enough to fill the mixing glass). Stir the mixture for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted (glass should feel cold and slight frost appears). Proper stirring integrates maple syrup and chills without over-aerating.

Strain & Serve

  1. 5

Place a large ice cube into a rocks glass. Strain the chilled cocktail over the large ice cube.

Garnish

  1. 6

Express the oils of one piece of fresh orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass and giving it a firm snap. Run the peel around the glass rim, then drop it into the drink as garnish.

Final Notes

  1. 7

Taste and adjust: if you prefer more sweetness, add up to 0.25 oz more maple syrup. If you want brighter citrus, add a tiny extra dash of orange bitters. If you used the optional rinse and want more of that finishing character, add up to 0.25 oz more rye or port cautiously.
