Bread & Topping

Method

Bread & Topping

  1. 1

    Prep oven and bread

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easier cleanup. Using a serrated knife, slice the baguette crosswise into 1-inch thick slices, cutting nearly through but leaving the base attached if you prefer pull-apart garlic bread; alternatively slice all the way through for individual pieces.

  2. 2

    Make garlic butter

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter (0.75 cups) and 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil. Add the minced garlic (6 cloves), chopped parsley (3 tbs), grated Parmesan (0.5 cups), salt (0.5 tsp), black pepper (0.25 tsp), red pepper flakes (0.25 tsp, optional) and dried oregano (0.5 tsp, optional). Mix thoroughly with a fork or spatula until evenly distributed and spreadable. Taste and adjust salt or garlic if needed.

  3. 3

    Assemble

If you sliced through each piece: spread about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of the garlic butter mixture onto the cut surface of each slice, ensuring an even layer to the edges. If you left the loaf intact (pull-apart style): gently pry open each slit and pipe or spread the garlic butter into each gap so most slices receive an equal amount.

  4. 4

    Bake

Arrange the prepared slices on the lined baking sheet in a single layer, cut side up. Bake in the preheated 400°F (200°C) oven for 10–12 minutes, until the butter is melted and the edges of the bread begin to toast and turn golden.

Finish (optional)

  1. 5

    Add cheese and broil

If using shredded mozzarella (1 cup), remove the tray from the oven after the initial 10–12 minutes. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the bread slices. Return the baking sheet to the oven and switch to broil on high. Broil 1–2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned. This step will only take a short time; do not walk away to avoid burning.

  2. 6

    Final touches and serve

Remove the garlic bread from the oven. If desired, sprinkle with the optional lemon zest (1 tsp) for brightness and a little extra chopped parsley. Let cool for 1–2 minutes, then serve warm as a side. Use a spatula to transfer slices for a neat presentation.
