Cocktail
- 1
Measure and combine
Chill an Old Fashioned glass (rocks glass) by filling it with ice or placing it briefly in the freezer. In a mixing glass or directly in the chilled glass, add 2 oz rye whiskey (or bourbon), 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.
- 2
Stir and dilute
If using a mixing glass, fill the mixing glass with ice and stir briskly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (about 15–20% dilution). If building in the serving glass, add ice and stir 20–30 seconds to achieve the same chill and dilution.
- 3
Prepare the glass
Discard the chilling ice from the serving glass if you used it to chill. Place one large ice cube (or fresh rocks) in the glass.
- 4
Strain and serve
Strain the mixed cocktail into the prepared serving glass over the large ice cube.
- 5
Express the orange peel
Take an orange peel about 1.5–2 inches wide. Hold it with the outside (zest) facing down over the drink and give it a firm twist to express the oils onto the surface. Rub the peel around the glass rim, then drop the peel into the drink (or discard if you prefer).
- 6
Garnish
Optionally add a maraschino cherry skewered or dropped into the glass. Serve immediately.
