Method
Prepare Ingredients
- 1
Grate the fresh turmeric root and fresh ginger finely. Measure out ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, and black pepper so they're ready to add.
- 2
Make the Golden Milk
- 3
Combine and Warm
Pour 2 cups of milk into a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the grated turmeric, ground turmeric, grated ginger, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Stir to combine.
- 4
Simmer Gently
Heat the mixture until it is hot but not boiling, about 5–7 minutes. Keep it at a low simmer so flavors infuse; stir occasionally and scrape bottom with a spatula to prevent sticking. Maintain a gentle steam and remove from heat when small bubbles form around the edge.
- 5
Emulsify for Smoothness
Add 1 teaspoon coconut oil (or ghee) and 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup to the warm milk. Whisk vigorously for 30 seconds or use an immersion blender for 20–30 seconds to emulsify the fat and create a lightly frothy, uniform texture. If you prefer extra froth, froth with a milk frother for 10–15 seconds.
- 6
Finish with Vanilla
Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and taste. Adjust sweetness with an additional 1/2 tablespoon honey or maple syrup if desired.
Strain and Serve
- 7
If you used grated roots and prefer a smoother drink, strain the golden milk through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof pitcher or directly into mugs, pressing on solids to extract liquid. If you blended finely, straining is optional.
- 8
Pour into two mugs (approximately 1 cup each). Dust each serving lightly with 1/8–1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and, if using, a tiny pinch of turmeric powder for extra color.
- 9
Serve immediately while warm. Stir before sipping to reincorporate any settled spices.
