Method

Tuna Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Tuna

Start by selecting a high-quality fresh tuna steak. Rinse it under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Marinate the Tuna

In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and mirin. Place the tuna steak in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it. Let it marinate for about 15 minutes, turning occasionally.

  3. 3

    Sear the Tuna

Heat a skillet or frying pan over high heat. Once hot, remove the tuna from the marinade and sear each side for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, just until the outside is cooked but the inside remains rare. Remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes.

  4. 4

    Coat with Sesame Seeds

Spread the black and white sesame seeds on a plate. Roll the seared tuna steak in the sesame seeds, coating all sides evenly.

Garnish and Serving

  1. 5

    Slice and Serve

Using a sharp knife, slice the tuna steak into thin pieces, about 1/4 inch thick. Arrange the slices on a serving plate.

  2. 6

    Add Garnishes

Chop the green onions finely and sprinkle them over the tuna slices. Serve with wasabi and pickled ginger on the side for dipping.

  3. 7

    Enjoy Your Dish

Tuna tataki is best enjoyed fresh, so serve immediately and savor the flavors!
